Flexible Learning Hub

Flexible Learning Arrangement

Year 8, 9, and 10 students who are identified as disengaging or non-attending in their traditional school environments are provided with a flexible learning arrangement through the Department of Education.

This arrangement aims to cater to the unique needs and circumstances of these students, acknowledging that a one-size-fits-all approach to education may not be suitable for everyone. As part of this flexible arrangement, these students are referred to VIRB, as an approved FLIQ community group, which operates in collaboration with the School of Distance Education in Charters Towers.

Educational Support

Within this program, students attend our Hub for three days each week. Two are dedicated to completing their FOCUS in Numeracy & Literacy curriculum. This curriculum is provided by the School of Distance Education, ensuring that students receive a structured and comprehensive educational experience.

The Hub is thoughtfully designed to create an engaging and conducive learning environment for the participating students. It is equipped with state-of-the-art conferencing technology, allowing students to have seamless and remote access to their teachers and educational resources. This technological integration not only facilitates learning but also prepares students for the digital demands of the modern world.

Extracurricular Opportunities

In addition to their core academic curriculum, students in the program have access to a diverse range of extracurricular opportunities aimed at holistic development:
Rewire
This program provides students with access to a soundproof booth and the chance to create VR character selfies branded with VITAL Way, offering them a unique and creative outlet for self-expression.
FocusBand EEG Technology
Students can use this cutting-edge technology to improve their focus and concentration, helping them excel not only academically but also in various aspects of life.
VR Simulations
These simulations enable students to explore their own virtues and vices and initiate character development through engaging social and emotional well-being programs and youth values programs.

Young Entrepreneurship Program

The Hub offers a "Side Hustle" opportunity for aspiring young entrepreneurs. In this program, students work collaboratively in small clusters of three to develop a comprehensive business plan. They receive mentoring and support throughout a 6-week micro social enterprise experience, which equips them with valuable entrepreneurial skills and real-world experience in business operations.

Job Taster Program

Students can also participate in the "Job Taster" program, which enables them to explore potential career paths. They select three jobs from a wide range of local Caloundra-based small businesses and work one three-hour shift in each business. By doing so, they gain hands-on experience and insights into various industries and professions. Students have the opportunity to choose their favourite job and complete an additional five shifts for that specific business. This not only helps them develop a comprehensive resume but also ensures they possess the job readiness skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the workplace.

Expansion Plans

The FLIQ program's impact is already tangible in Caloundra, with one operational facility currently serving students. Excitingly, there are plans for further expansion in the next 12 months, which will see the establishment of another facility. This expansion will allow the program to reach and positively influence even more students, providing them with the support, education, and opportunities they need to thrive academically and personally.
